The BMW X5 (F15) is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed worldwide by BMW since 2013. The car was unveiled in 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show. Early X5 models include xDrive50i, xDrive30d, M50d. BMW xDrive40d, xDrive35i, xDrive25d, sDrive25d were to be added in December 2013.
I'm going to tap the feed coming out of the factory amp behind the driver side panel that goes to the factory subs. I have a JL XD600 mono sub amp from our last SUV that I'll use to power the JL box and a PAC line out converter between the two. Will post pics and impressions after it's done.
Likely Wednesday. This is the box I'm using.95. This is a great thread and has just the info I've been looking for. I'm new to the board (my inaugural post) with a pretty well equipped 2 week old 2016 X5 35i. I purchased mine off the lot. It was ordered for a customer (who bailed at delivery) and who obviously felt that quality car stereo was a low priority.

Mine has base audio. At first blush, while I was clearly distracted by the euphoria of the purchase, I thought the sound quality of the base audio was acceptable. I took the time to check out the functionality of my USB music stick with the i-Drive and all seemed well. And while I can't say I took the time to audition or compare the base stereo to the HK, I was nonetheless stoked to find such a well equipped car sitting on the lot. So my focus was elsewhere. Besides, I thought, if the lack of any option could be addressed in the aftermarket, it would be the car audio system.Welcome to bimmer-world.Fast forward two weeks, and the euphoria of the purchase has begun to subside.
I'm delighted with the car but now, the limitations of the base audio sound is front and center (no pun intended.) I've spent some time researching options. The 'plug and play' speaker upgrade options seem attractive and easy, if only they were actually available. I spoke to a lovely lady at BAVsound yesterday who was eager to presell me their soon to be available 'Stage One' speaker upgrade kit.
I was tempted, but disappointed to discover that the 10CM door mounted speakers have been promised for months. She insisted that availability is imminent.I am continuing to research. It's frustrating not to have any way to demo the projected end result. I love Mayhemwa's ingenuity in fabricating a door mount.
I happen to have a friend with a 3-d printer who is always looking for a challenging project. He has offered to help me design a speaker mount for the doors as well as a ring mount for the center channel dash speaker.Stay tuned. I sent you a PM. Thanks!I'm fortunate to have a salesman at the dealership who is a young bright guy and a real enthusiast. He was hoping I could retrofit the HK system, (we can't) and has been texting me pictures of the speaker / tweeter locations in the rear doors etc and service manual schematics. On the other hand he may just be feeling guilty for selling me a car with base audio!I will try to get the correct grills for the rear door tweeters and add those as well.Mayhemwa, what was your criterea for choosing the dash speaker? Did the bass blocker accomplish its intended effect?
Hi, I just purchased a 2014 x5 and I have been reading through all of the forums on how to upgrade the speakers/sound system. I would love to do something similar to this set up, but I am definitely not savvy enough to build a custom spacer/adapter like you did. I'm wondering if anyone has tried using this spacer/adapter I came across online -. It says it fits the x5 f15 but the speaker size is 130mm, I would think it would be easier for me to add a thin plate on top to make the 4inch speaker work? Its funny you mention it in a earlier post, I've read a lot of posts about people wanting to upgrade the speakers, I'm surprised no one has made a spacer/adapter kit sold separately for this model X5 yet. Added a bass blocker to the new center (oem did not have any) and it all fit stock opening. Also added the additonal focal tweeter and held is down with silicone.
Now have 3 tweeters up front.Hi, Did you happen to test the center speaker before adding the bass blocker on it? I'm in the process of putting together my system and trying to decide whether to add a mid and tweeter to the center or just a coaxial speaker to the center.Thanks. Edited- just realized that someone asked the same question about the bass blocker. I'm just wondering if you didnt use the bass blocker on the mid and bridged it in between to the tweeter if that would keep the center sound clean. Also did you end up changing out the rear door speakers? I'm trying to decide on going with just component mids or coaxials. The factory rear doors are components mids right? Thanks. If youre going to do it mind as well be thorough instead of compromising. The car was designed to use component speakers all around to separate out the sounds so i stayed consistent but upgraded quality.

All the midranges were designed with some sort of frequency blocker. My understanding the tweeters share the same wire as the mids but tweeter have blockers that onky feed it the highs.I dont understand the bridge question.Cheers.Sent from my LG-D851 using Bimmerfest mobile app (http://r.tapatalk.com/byo?rid=92836). Okay great, that definitely helps! I will go with components for the rear doors as well then. I just got my Focal ES 100k Component, Tweeters, crossover boxes and two 8' Focal underseat subs in the mail. Was holding off on the rear doors to see what people were suggesting sounds better.
My only problem is I havent seen any Focal Component only speaker sets for sale, I may have to buy another kit and try to sell the tweeters.Did you ever end up adding a amplifier or do you feel the sound is good enough with just all of the speaker upgrades? As for the bridging the center speaker, Ive read that the center speaker for the hifi set up only has one wire pair for the mid speaker only. So i figured you bridged off the mid speaker to wire the tweeter. I think I will probably just go Focal Coaxial speaker for the center speaker with a bass blocker to keep it simple. Thanks for all the info, really appreciate it. Okay great, that definitely helps! =)Yes i bridged the tweeter for the center speaker. Sounds great.
I didnt use an amp the speakers i choose fit the power band the car produced.I was aiming for clarity and i assure you when i crank it up there is no distortion and the sounds are clear.Watch out for the wire polarity and the door panels are tough to remove. What housing are you using?Sent from my LG-D851 using Bimmerfest mobile app (http://r.tapatalk.com/byo?rid=92836). I will have to see how it sounds once everything is together and broken in. I may possibly end up throwing a Match PP 82DSP 8 channel amp in down the road, I would like to get a little more hit/power out of the speakers.
But I will just have to wait and see how satisfied I am with the speaker upgrades first. For the speaker housing's I found a guy that makes them on ebay and he ended up just living down the street from me. It's nice to see this thread revived!
I've long since finished my own speaker upgrade, and I am still in debt to Mayhemwa for his sage advice! I might consider one thing, however, with regard to the rear doors.
If your vehicle is equipped with basic audio, you will find there is no cutout for a tweeter when you remove the rear door panels. Thus, whereas I used the Focal Elite component speakers with the crossover in the front doors, I used Focal performance coax speakers in the rear. This vastly simplified the installation.FWIW, I replaced the front speaker with a BAVSound Stage 1 component speaker (I was able to purchase just one speaker which is a direct fit) and the subs with the Rockford Fosgate BMW T-3's.So far, I've kept the factory amp. While the sound improvement has been spectacular, at higher volumes, I am at or over 80% on the volume dial depending on source.
I have also been feeling the need for more sophisticated tone control than the basic hifi setup allows. So I am contemplating either the purchase of a Bimmertech amp, or finding a way to code my car to enable the HK equalizer settings.I will pose this coding question in a separate thread.

Do you feel like you lost any lower mid sound out of the rear speakers by replacing them with coaxial? It would be a lot cheaper and easier to just buy 2 focal coaxial for the rears, but id really hate to lose any more mid out of these tiny ass speakers.Yea these amps are very much under powered having to crank them up to 80% volume to get a decent amount of sound out of them is crazy. All of my previous cars would be cranked at 50% max, So im pretty sure I will be adding the match pp 82dsp amp down the road.
I'm just having a hard time deciding on which rear speakers I want to go with now.Once again, I appreciate all the info here.Thanks. When I did the speaker upgrade, I replaced the center and front door speakers first. It took an extra week to get the Focal Coax speakers for the rear doors. I was pretty stoked after the first speakers went in and very pleasantly surprised at how much additional 'depth' the Focals added from the rear. The BAVSound center speaker also really fills out the midrange on my system. As you mention there is a large price difference in the price of the Focal component vs coax speakers.
Approx $750 vs $250/pair.Have you already removed the door panels? The fronts are reasonably straight forward whereas the rear panels required more brute force than I was comfortable exerting. I took the car to an Al & Ed's shop and paid them $100 to pull the rear panels.80% volume is pretty thunderous on my setup with no evidence of clipping, but I will take a look at the amp you mentioned above. Could you be kind enough to tell me which wires your ended up tapping for your sub amp? My sub amp works but I feel like it's not getting enough of a bass note, I might have tapped the completely wrong speaker wires.ThanksI'm going to tap the feed coming out of the factory amp behind the driver side panel that goes to the factory subs.
