What the heck is the difference between Armada and X-Wing? February 23, 2016 So excitement for Star Wars is at an all-time high. The Force Awakens just came out and is pretty amazing, they’ve already begun work on Episode VIII, and if that wasn’t enough, we’re. RoTJ’s Super Star Destroyer is coming to Star Wars Armada, along with some Clone Wars love for X-wing 2.0! Come see the latest on the Executor. Gold Swudron Podcast’s Twitch stream yesterday showed FFG’s Star Wars team unveiled the Executor. The original video has since been taken down but.

You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this; Two games enter! One game leaves! Trashdome: Star Wars Armada vs Star Wars X-Wing.

But for taste reasons, not necessarily quality. Armada matches are a slower slugfest where ships maneuver about one another for multiple turns dropping damage cards on them. The fighter/cap ship interplay really works for me, too, which is something that isn't in x wing. I also prefer longer games to multiple short games-for ME I prefer a 2-3 hour evening game and Armada fits right in a sensible weeknight if prepared beforehand.I do think armada's releases have also been a bit more sensibly managed and the designers thought hard about how card complexity would build in the ruleset in more manageable way. I truly love both games. It's as difficult as deciding which is better, ANH or ESB.X-Wing is always a good time and there is a huge selection of ships along with so many options that you could probably field something different each week for a year. I love variety in my games which is why I dig stuff like HeroScape, Duel of Ages 2, etc.

I can't think of a bad thing to say about X-wing except that it's a bitch to store which is not an issue with the game.Armada is slightly more ambitious and I think the games have a lot more tension going on. There are also many more difficult decisions to make which really makes you feel like the commander of a massive, expensive fleet.

I truly enjoy that Captain's chair feeling you get while playing this. One of my favorite games (though I never played as much as I would like) was Star Fleet Battles and I always wished there could be a streamlined, but not dumb, version. While the two games may not be that similar, I feel they hit the same notes and Armada is clearly a winner for me here.I don't think either game is necessarily superior but perhaps it boils down to whether you enjoy being a hot shot ace pilot or the calculating admiral of a massive space navy. I think I'm more of a (shitty) admiral so,VOTE = ARMADAP.S. I know they did some streamlining for new lines in the Star Fleet Universe but I don't want to support ADB for finicky reasons.P.P.S Star Trek is dead to me.

Except the OS. WAIT A MINUTE. I did not get to vote.ARMADA. It's a tie.I love X-Wing and all, and it is the premiere dogfighting game. It takes one of my favorite parts of Star Wars- the Top Gunny jet pilot stuff- and makes a big ol' fun pew pew game out of it. I don't keep up with it anymore, I stopped after the Headhunters wave and I still want the Rebels/FA/RO stuff, but I have a big collection of the 'main' ships and it is still fun to pull them out and run a game. I've been playing a slightly simplified version with my son lately and really enjoying it.BUT ARMADA IS THE BEST.

It is bigger, bolder, more elaborate and more compelling overall. AND you still get the pew pew fighter pilot stuff (if you are awesome and run lots of squadrons). It captures the Battle of Endor/Scarif scale of big ship engagements really well, and the miniatures are just beautiful on the table. I love that it has lots of custom engineered bits, I love that it has a completely innovative and unique movement method. The ship command mechanics are great, and overall it is just a more multi-faceted and engaging game. It's OK that it's longer because the scale is bigger.

Armada

I have the new wave of ships on the way and I am very much looking forward to the new squadrons in particular.I do kind of wonder if the rumors that it was originally developed as a Battlefleet Gothic relaunch are actually true, because it captures some things that game did but without some of the wonkier stuff.

I can only really afford to buy into one competitive miniatures game and I'm trying to decide between X-Wing and Armada.Overall I like the gameplay and theme of Armada over X-Wing.I want to get your opinion on things first before making a decision and either buying into X-Wing or Pre-ordering Armada.Do you think Armada will be as big as X-Wing in terms of the competitive scene?.Do you think Armada will be played as much in gaming stores? Will I be able to walk in and play on certain nights in general?.Do you think Armada will last as long as X-Wing has already.Do you think the player base is going to be split in any significant way? Meaning, do you think the games are going to be competing for the same group of players ultimately resulting in a detriment to one or both games?Basically, I just want to make sure the money I put into one of the systems is not put to waste. I'm wanting to play in tournaments and be able to play with friends on my own with a system that will be around for a long time to come. What are your opinions? Thanks!.To early to tell. It has a leg up because I feel like FFG may have learned a lot.

Example having objectives and making it more then death match. This is a very local answer and will be hard to answer for you. Example almost no one plays xwing at the store by my house but a bunch play at the store about 20 minutes away.I feel like just because it has Star destroyers Armada will last for at least a few years. You will have some split and that will hurt aramda because it came second. Some people like me would have much rather been playing armada this whole time but got into xwing because had nothing better to get. However, players like me may not want to stop playing xwing and will now not join into armada right away at least.

Due to the investment that has already been dumped into xwing. I think the fact that armada will have access to way more ships than xwing is going to work strongly in its favor. Xwing is already having to stretch to come up with ship releases. There's no reason that everything in xwing won't appear in armada, plus all of the larger ships that would just be too big for xwing.also along with this I think there will be more granularity for building lists and we'll be able to a lot of variation.

My friend wants to play with 2-3 SD that have minimal upgrades, I want to play with 1 SD with maximum upgrades and a swarm of fighters, bombers, etc.I think this, along with a slightly better rule set IMO, will set armada up for massive success. I'm picturing a linked narrative game of Big Ships battling for orbital supremacy in Armada, while Fighters play a game of X-Wing, and agents on the ground fight over a planetside objective. The results of each game could have impact on any of the others.

Win your game of X-Wing? Your Armada buddy immediately gets to roll a free attack with one of his fighter squads against an enemy squadron or ship.

They still worked, as do people's iphone 4 models, but they were not actively supported.Quite honestly, the reason for that is not wholly the industry but also consumers. Consumers constantly demand new features, new functions, faster devices, longer battery life, etc, etc. Cara upgrade ios iphone And consumers flock to stores and online to buy the latest iPhone or Samsung or whatever flavor of device they prefer. That in part is why cell phone manufacturers update their models every 10-15 months.

Or- strafe the enemy in your other teammate's Imperial Assault Game.Secure a location in IA? The air defense comes online and fires into the Armada game, or you can signal jam the X-Wing game and hand out some stress!Did you get your Medium Base ship in Armada to a certain location? Launch the landing shuttles, and reinforce your teammates in IA!The effects would need to be carefully considered to have an impact but not be game breaking, and should not be overly tied to current board state. For example I would not want to say that if Luke's squadron in Armada dies, the Xwing game immediately loses Luke, or something like that. The biggest concern would be getting the X-Wing and armada games to feel right in relation to each other. I think the X-Wing game would be representing a different fighter battle than the ones you see in Armada, and victory/advantage in X-Wing would represent being able to go support another front in the Orbital battle that's being played out in Armada. If you win in X-Wing add one squadron to your teammate's side of the same type as one of your surviving ships, might work.Juggling balance, flavor, and fun would be the challenge, but it could make for an epic Saturday!. 1) Hard to say. I love Armada's variable objective system on paper, but in practice it's incredibly difficult to balance asymmetric/variable systems like that.

Time will tell if Armada's system holds up. Worse comes to worse, a simple 300 point Deathmatch may replace the objectives system.

Also, since Armada games take longer to play than X-Wing games, it might be difficult to organize high level tournaments that fit into one day. I know it's possible to organize such tournaments for big games, but it's a challenge both to host and attend.2) I can see Armada getting dedicated game nights in medium/large stores.

Some X-Wing players will definitely play Armada on X-Wing night for sake of variety. Armada's a longer game though, so it'll be harder to get games in.3) Armada might stick round as long as X-Wing, but I don't see it achieving X-Wing's explosive success. Part of why X-Wing is everywhere is because it's an easy game to learn and relatively fast, compared to most other miniatures games.4) There might be some split between the Armada and X-Wing player base, but I don't think it will greatly impact either game's player pool.

Armada and X-Wing are fundamentally two different types of games: X-Wing is a seat-of-your-pants, high stakes dogfighting simulator. Armada is a slow paced, calculated war between two master strategists. These will appeal to two different types of players. There will always be some crossover, but I don't think Armada will cannibalize X-Wing (or vice versa),As for general purchasing advice, if you want a sure thing then either invest in X-Wing or wait until Armada comes out. X-Wing already has an incredibly healthy player base and from the looks of things will continue to have one for years to come.

If you want to get in on the ground floor, buy in to Armada. Fantasy Flight is very skilled with balancing asymmetric gameplay and there's no doubt Armada will be a fine game. It will be easier to climb the tournament ladder while the player base is still young and small, plus you'll get to say you've been playing from the beginning.:)Edit: also consider that it's not too expensive to buy into X-Wing at the competitive level. You can get a tournament list up and running for around $120 (compared to the 4-digit figures I hear thrown around for games like Warhammer 40k). Armada will be more expensive, but there's also less ships to buy right now. 1) & 2) I think the biggest deterrent will be play area. 6'x3' is a big ask.

That doesn't account for the cards, dice, and token storage off the play area. A pair of X-wing players take up a 3x3 or 4x3 table PLUS the space for them to move around, this already imposes limitations on how many players a competition can field. Now for casual in-store play you could seat upward of a dozen people around 3 games of Catan on a 6x3 table. Instead you're going to let 2 people go at it in that same space?3) Armada is competing w/ X-wing, but I think it will last as long as FF supports it, which will be probably be just before they stop supporting X-wing.4) I think there will be enough overlap and enough new players to both that the split won't be too damaging, it will vary from location to location of course. I absolutely hated the bumping rules for xwing because they made 0 sense for a game that is recreating a 3d dogfight and I sold all my models after I got bored with it. I liked attack wing but the tournament prizes having actual effects on game play turned me off of that too since I didn't always have time to play in tournaments. I'm pretty sure this game will have a good following for a long time, I just wish the play area wasn't shaped differently from xwing and attack wing.

Star Wars Armada Wave 8

Remember that xwing started off fairly slow in getting a larger community and I think armada will actually benefit from having a lot of players interested in this type of game due go xwing.
